Friedrichsplatz 9, 78628 Rottweil, Germany Pauls

Cute waitress who was most helpful. Unfortunately her helpfulness didn’t extend to making coffee. I watched in horror as she burnt my long black beyond recognition, and my friend’s flat white was served near boiling point. Undrinkably bad.

Schloßplatz 34, 88709 Meersburg, Germany Atelier-cafe-benz

This shiny new café opposite the castle in Meersburg was terrible. The “worst cappuccino ever” according to my friend, and the doppio I had didn’t fare any better.

Müllerstraße 50, 80469 Munich, Germany Loretta Bar

5
Very cute little bar/café on the east edge of the city centre. Very friendly and helpful in spite of my horrible attempts at German. Alas, the coffee was only average. Acceptable but not worth seeking out.

Sydney International Airport NSW, Australia Danks St Depot

6
Easily the best coffee I’ve ever had in an airport. It had crema, strong flavour and wasn’t burnt to a crisp. If you’re hankering for a caffeine hit at Sydney’s international terminal, I recommend making your way through the security screening to Danks…

Sydney International Airport NSW, Australia Bar Coluzzi

Stuck in the check-in area waiting for your flight to open, your choice of coffee purveyors is rather limited. Bar Coluzzi is pretty well exactly what you expect from an airport café: terribly average.

50/68 Comrie St, Wanniassa ACT 2903, Australia Coffee Guru, Erindale Centre

When venturing into Canberra’s southern suburbs my expectations for quality coffee are never particularly high, and the Coffee Guru franchise in the Erindale Centre did nothing to change that. That I drank it is probably the best thing I can say.

142 Bunda St, City ACT 2601, Australia Dobinson’s Bakery

Somehow managed to make my long black look as though it had been topped with burnt microwaved milk—nonetheless it was a reasonable impression of what coffee should taste like, though nothing to write home about.

59 Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah ACT 2604, Australia D’Browes

6
A fine-dining establishment at the Narrabundah shops, D’Browes has excellent slow cooked lamb shanks, but only halfway decent coffee. Smooth and tasty enough, but lacking strength.

1 Bay St, Byron Bay NSW 2481, Australia Fishheads

5
Cute café right on Byron Bay’s main beach. Tasty food, but the coffee is only passable. Unless you’re having breaky, I’d find somewhere else to get your caffeine on.

33 Bougainville St, Griffith ACT 2603, Australia Grande’s

A cute café nestled in The Lawns at Manuka. Lovely food, not so lovely espresso. Drinkable, but not noteworthy.
