50/68 Comrie St, Wanniassa ACT 2903, Australia Coffee Guru, Erindale Centre
When venturing into Canberra’s southern suburbs my expectations for quality coffee are never particularly high, and the Coffee Guru franchise in the Erindale Centre did nothing to change that. That I drank it is probably the best thing I can say.
142 Bunda St, City ACT 2601, Australia Dobinson’s Bakery
Somehow managed to make my long black look as though it had been topped with burnt microwaved milk—nonetheless it was a reasonable impression of what coffee should taste like, though nothing to write home about.
59 Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah ACT 2604, Australia D’Browes
A fine-dining establishment at the Narrabundah shops, D’Browes has excellent slow cooked lamb shanks, but only halfway decent coffee. Smooth and tasty enough, but lacking strength.
1 Bay St, Byron Bay NSW 2481, Australia Fishheads
Cute café right on Byron Bay’s main beach. Tasty food, but the coffee is only passable. Unless you’re having breaky, I’d find somewhere else to get your caffeine on.
33 Bougainville St, Griffith ACT 2603, Australia Grande’s
A cute café nestled in The Lawns at Manuka. Lovely food, not so lovely espresso. Drinkable, but not noteworthy.

Parked right in the front entrance to the Old Bus Depot Markets, The Outpost is not much more than a cart with an espresso machine and a few cakes. They served me a long black that was reasonably tasty, but insanely hot.
I’d only go there if the line…
8 Garema Pl, City ACT 2601, Australia Gus’ Café
After some bad experiences in my formative years, I’d long avoided going to the Canberra institution that is Gus’ Café. I gave it another go the other day and was pleasantly surprised—the cups are still a little dirty, and the waiters’ still a little ho…
National Gallery of Australia, Parkes Pl, Parkes ACT 2600, Australia NGA Members’ Lounge
I haven’t been to the standard NGA café for a while, but in my experience it’s more on the side of miss than hit. So if you can sneak into the Members’ Lounge it’s worth your while. The coffee is by no means amazing, but it’s tasty enough. The day I vis…
222 City Walk, City ACT 2601, Australia Jazz Apple Café
Not sure why they call themselves a café, they’re really just a cupcake shop that happens to serve coffee. The cupcakes were delicious, the coffee not so.
Eyre St & Jardine St, Kingston ACT 2604, Australia Kingston Grind
If you’re hanging out in Green Square, then Kingston Grind is the place you want to get your coffee; though—oddly given they’re the “original” café in their group—they have always been a little lower in quality than both Tonic and Group Seven.
