The Bakery Cafe has recently sprung up in the refurbished former location of Chinese dining institution, Sammy’s. While it is just around the corner from the glut of cafés in Garema Place, it lacks both the hipster charm and relatively high standard of coffee of these nearby neighbours. My double macchiato was voluminous, arriving in a half-full large mug, and tasting too bitter. My ham, cheese and tomato toastie was representative of their breakfast menu: pretty standard and not overly impressive.

The barrister asks ‘do you need sugar?’. Insulted, I said ‘that depends on whether you make a good coffee’. Not bad, but take the sugar if your less inclined to a bitter blend.

Some good reviews for this cafe’s espresso, but it wasn’t really to my taste. I don’t know what blend they are using or what size baskets are in their group handles, but my espresso was so strong it was almost like syrup.

This was the worst cafe experience I have ever had. Period.
From being told that we would need to make a booking to use our Living Social coupon, as not to hurt their “core business”, to the unavailability of menu items the whole meal was horrible.

“We love coffee too!” is the declaration that dominates the chalkboard menu at this small outdoor chinese café. I’m pleased to report that you can actually believe them. They serve remarkably decent espresso at low prices ($2.50) and with friendly service.
